Description:
This course provides an introduction to the application of quantum theory to the study of the properties of solids and surfaces.
The content includes review of statistical mechanics, quantum statistics, bonding in solids, crystal structure, X-ray diffraction, specific heats of solids, lattice dynamics of crystals, band theory of solids, semiconductors, semiconductor junctions, electronic devices, amorphous materials, methods of surface analysis.

Assessment is by assignments, test and final examination.

Prerequisites: M211 Quantum Theory and M202 Properties of Matter.

Bachelor of Science in Physics
Graduate Diploma in Science (Physics)
Postgraduate Diploma in Physics.
